Three factors in our environment can effect our ability to participate
in auditory communication; distance, background noise, and room
acoustics. Sound fades rapidly as distance increases. Any environmental
noise adds to listening difficulty. In addition sound waves repeatedly
reflect off walls of a room and this reverberation of sound can
disrupt speech understanding.
Hearing aids are great assists and rapidly improving with technological
advancements, but they will amplify speech as well as interfering
noises. Assistive listening devices are designed to reduce the effects
of the major environmental influences. These devices position microphones
a few inches from the speaker so that the desired sound is captured
and sent directly to the listener without the negative effects of
distance, background noise, or poor acoustics.
