Hearing loss is the third most common problem with only arthritis
and hypertension occurring more frequently.
Characteristics of Hearing Loss
- sensori-neural hearing loss is rarely noticed in the early
stages because the loss usually develops gradually and is frequency
specific
- a hearing loss can develop a a rate of one decibel a year,
a change so small that the individual simple does not perceive
a change
- sometimes when a loss of 30 or 40 decibels develops the individual
often does not complain about hearing differently, but may say
that other people don't speak as clearly as they used to or they
don't speak up.
- sensori-neural hearing loss usually has the greatest effects
for high frequency sounds, which is the crucial range for speech
clarity
- there is usually less loss of hearing for low frequency sounds
which contribute to loudness
- because of the above the individual with sensori-neural hearing
loss will often say they can hear the voices, but just can't understand
them.
