What is tinnitus?
It is a subjective experience where one hears a sound when no external
physical sound is present. Some call it "head noises", "ear ringing"
or use similar terms to describe it. It is a condition suffered
by more than a hundred thousand Canadians, and many millions of
others around the world.
Effects of tinnitus can vary greatly among individuals , ranging
from mild and occasional to being a chronic, debilitating condition.
Are there treatments for tinnitus?
Because tinnitus is a symptom associated with various disorders,
there is no one treatment. The most effective treatment for tinnitus
is elimination or prevention of the cause i.e.. noise exposure,
blows to the head, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems, large
doses of certain drugs such as aspirin, anemia, hypertension, stress,
impacted ear wax. Unfortunately the cause often cannot be identified
for specific individuals or cannot be corrected.
What should I do first?
A medical examination and audiological assessment (hearing assessment)
should precede any treatment. We are happy to provide further information
and web site suggestion upon request.
